K-2 Voicethread Examples

Our Families Project for a First Grade Social Studies Community Unit
This project was a collaboration between Carine St. John, K-12 Technology Staff Developer for Tenafly Public Schools in NJ and Carol Lee, Stillman School First Grade Teacher and her class. The purpose of this project was to experiment with making use of a web 2.0 tool, Voicethread, that allows for online conversations around posted images, promote conversations about a topic being studied among the students, share work with colleagues, family and friends by publishing work on the Internet and provide a wider audience than just the usual classroom or school all while giving students opportunities to practice technological literacy skills.

The project integrated the use of technology within the Social Studies curriculum. Ms. Lee had completed lessons about communities and families as communities.I taught the boys and girls to create family webs and drawings of their family using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. They planned their webs and drawings on paper first before re-creating them on the computer. They learned how to input text and use various drawing tools, how to name and save their files, as well as open them again. After their files were imported into Voicethread, the students recorded the description of their pictures under their own identity. They had to practice speaking loudly and clearly and enjoyed recording into the microphone.

Collecting 100 comments for 100 Day celebration
5 STAR RATING by Colette. This project is so simple but I'm sure this youngster was thrilled with all of his comments.

Seasonal Stories - Spring: First Grade Students at Arlington Traditional School study about seasonal changes. Students wrote stories about what they like to do in the Spring. Using Kid Pix they drew pictures and exported them as JPEGs. We uploaded the pictures to Voicethread and the students recorded their published stories. This was a great activity that promoted reading fluency. This is the third and final installment in the Seasonal Story Series. This project was facilitated by Fran Figari - First Grade Teacher and Heather Hurley - Instructional Technology Coordinator. This project is also part of our HP Teaching with Technology Grant.

Seasonal Stories - Winter: First Grade Students at Arlington Traditional School study about seasonal changes. Students wrote stories about what they like to do in the Winter. Using Kid Pix they drew pictures and exported them as JPEGs. We uploaded the pictures to Voicethread and the students recorded their published stories. This was a great activity that promoted reading fluency. This is the second in the Seasonal Story Series. This project was facilitated by Fran Figari - First Grade Teacher and Heather Hurley - Instructional Technology Coordinator. This project is also part of our HP Teaching with Technology Grant.

The One Hundred Mile Diet Project - a collaborative project made by Lincoln Elementary. Learn about Food Miles and the impact of eating local foods on the environment, your community and your health. Add in a little math by determining food miles (how far your food travels) and radius (by creating a 100 mile radius from your home. We would love for you and your students to add to our VoiceThread at http://voicethread.com/share/61010/ . Project source: Discovery Education Network

Happy Holidays - Northfield Community School Kindergarten students celebrating the 2007 holiday season created festive illustrations of their chosen holidays (some celebrate more than one) using the free, open source program Tux Paint. They added appropriate clip art and drawings to a provided background (interior of a house with a fireplace and table). These pictures were exported to .JPG and loaded into Voicethread so the students could comment on them. We're just getting started with Voicethread in our district so we've turned off comments; thanks for understanding! Animal Habitats - Northfield Community School Kindergarten students studying habitats created digital illustrations using KidPix representing various habitats. These included backgrounds and appropriate stickers for animals and other objects one might encounter. These pictures were exported to .JPG and loaded into Voicethread so the students could comment on them. Again, we're just getting started with Voicethread in our district so we've turned off comments; thanks for understanding! Interpreting the Past
Interpreting the Past, a social studies project for Grade 2 students, demonstrates how VoiceThread can be used to teach historical thinking and to examine both historical and current day photographs.

This is something I made for my daughters pre-school. They are interested in children in the year before school, using computers to give a narrative to the vast amounts of visual material they produce. All made with a MacBook (isight and photo booth).

This voicethread is a shared writing book created by a second grade class in October of 2007. They were asking to read the hard copy version every day so the teacher and I moved it to VoiceThread so they could read it at home with their families. Thanks to Jen Kugler for facilitating this as a 2nd/3rd grade looping teacher at Yarmouth Elementary School. Voicethread link:http://voicethread.com/share/13047/. Submitted by Cathy Wolinsky.

2nd Grade Book Reviews - Second graders at our school wrote book reviews in their regular classrooms. In computer class they created their avatar, searched the web for their book's cover, then drew 2-3 illustrations on KidPix to depict their favorite part of the story and their personal connection. They uploaded their pictures and avatars, then using their script they recorded their voices.

2nd Grade: Vertebrates--Groups of students did some reading and rudimentary research on vertebrates. They came up with the text and short audio blurbs themselves. The pictures were done with KidPix 3.
This is my first attempt at using VoiceThread, so don't blame the kids! Comments are on, moderated. We'd like to hear from someone who watches it. Thank you.

Year 2 Inquiry Project - Sea Cucumbers vs Octopus
Year 2 children were learning about sea creatures. We studied the octopus and the sea cucumber. The children wrote about each of these and then compared and contrasted them. Voicethread was used to capture their thinking about these creatures. View the following blog posts for links to the voice threads:

Second Grade Story Problems-Can you solve them?
Students wrote two digit addition story problems. We split them into two groups to create the VoiceThreads. Each student took a picture of their problem and read it. You can pause on that slide and use the comment button to tell your answer, how you solved it or even show how you did it with the drawing tool. Then move on and check your answer.
